Manager, Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Program – Full Time, Days (Culver City)

The Manager, Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (MBS) Program manages accreditation criteria and ensures regulatory compliance for all assigned program(s). Assists in program development, managing the accreditation process, ensuring continuous compliance with MBSAQIP standards, maintaining relevant pathways and protocols, patient education, monitoring outcomes data and collection, quality improvement initiatives, and the education of relevant staff with a focus on metabolic and bariatric patient safety. Works directly with the MBS Director to ensure program success and support navigation of patients in the program, including working with the Surgery Department. Serves as the liaison between the facility and all metabolic and bariatric proceduralists at the hospital and any general surgeons providing call coverage. Administers MBS Committee meetings, including an annual comprehensive review of the program. Collects and submits accurate, complete, and timely data to the MBSAQIP Registry. Works closely with the members of the metabolic and bariatric and general surgery departments to identify opportunities for clinical quality improvement and other special projects that may be identified. The Manager, MBS is a leadership position and has authority to implement required processes to ensure program success. May be responsible for employee coaching, training, hiring, counseling/discipline, performance assessment and payroll processes.

Job Responsibilities/Duties

  • Develops and manages the accreditation process for the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Program. Participates in program meetings and teleconferences, data compilation for audits and (re)accreditation site visits. Actively participates/coordinates committees and work groups as needed/requested. Provides orientation/education as requested and maintains staff education. Contributes to and supports bariatric program staff and educators. Manages Pre and Post-operative patient education classes.  Serves as an education resource on the MBSAQIP Registry for internal and external audiences by developing education materials and delivering presentations.
  • Identifies 100 percent of metabolic and bariatric patients for inclusion in MBSAQIP registry. Collects preoperative, intraoperative, 30-day postoperative, and long-term follow-up data components for the program through hospital and surgeon office records. Responsible for the oversight of the data collection process and verifying that data collection is consistent with that found in patients’ medical records. Ability to learn and utilize new software and Web applications. Ability to track information through various sources such as medical records, surgery clinics, death index, etc.
  • Maintains knowledge of the preoperative, perioperative and postoperative processes and protocols, equipment set-up, maintenance, and use. Provides patient/family or caregiver education and counseling in recognition and solution of physical, emotional, spiritual, and environmental health problems. Fosters identification of patient safety risks and application of practices to reduce harm. 
  • Collaborates on an ongoing basis with the Metabolic and Bariatric (MBS) Surgery Director, clinic staff, and physicians, promoting a positive communication and the ability to problem solve at every level. Work effectively with Hospital and individual Surgeon Office Staff. Establishes effective working relationships with members of the hospital community, especially staff in the surgery, medicine, nursing, medical records, and information systems departments and induvial bariatric surgeons’ offices whose support is necessary for the management and success of the program.
  • Provides a leadership role in policy/pathway development and organization. Develops and maintains quality improvement project goals that support patient outcomes. Knowledge of how to implement/update evidence-based practices into the existing facility framework. Maintains records related to operations and services that are complete, accurate, available, and in compliance with all legal and regulatory requirements. Ensures Infection Control procedures and HIPAA compliance. Serves as resource to staff for regulatory standards.
  • Maintains certification by periodically attends volunteer in-person professional development seminars offered at various annual meetings such as ASMBS Week, ASC Quality and Safety Conference, or ASC Clinical Congress. Other duties as assigned. 

Qualifications

Minimum Education: Graduate of an Accredited School of Nursing required. Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing preferred.

Minimum Experience: Two (2) years of experience with Bariatric Surgery Centers required. Strong time management skills and ability to effectively prioritize tasks. Strong computer skills with Outlook, Microsoft Word and Excel programs. Ability to build and maintain strong relationship at all levels of the organization required.  Knowledge of HIPPA regulations and standards.  Basic statistical knowledge required.  Successfully completes the online MBSCR training program for MBS Reviewer Certification (may complete the program within the first year of hire) required.

Req. Certification/Licensure: Active, current, and unencumbered Licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of California. AHA Basic Life Support preferred. Certification as a Bariatric Nurse preferred.  Clinical chart review and abstraction experience preferred.  Quality improvement or patient safety knowledge and experience preferred.  Previous leadership experience preferred.
