Director/Sr. Director Chemistry

Director Chemistry Responsibilities:
• The successful candidate will provide leadership to the team based on their chemistry and drug discovery experience while serving as an integral contributor to discovery projects
• Report to SVP Chemistry and support in developing and execution of peptide/medicinal chemistry strategies towards identifying oral and injectable peptides as clinical candidates.

• Direct and evaluate the activities of an experienced peptide chemistry team while engaged in wet and dry laboratory work to manage discovery chemistry activities
• Critically evaluate chemistry strategies while rigorously driving data-driven Go/No-go decisions
• Provide input and leadership across a broad range of chemistry activities including identification of hit peptides to lead optimization and finally to development candidate nomination.

This may include discovery project leadership based on a matrix-driven organization.

• Contribute to development of new strategy and technologies for building and maintaining a robust drug discovery and development portfolio and technology platform
• Participate in decision-making processes within the project team by actively engaging in scientific and technical discussions.

• Effectively communicate project work, issues, schedules and accomplishments to senior management
• Evaluate and select CROs and CMOs and oversee key preclinical chemistry activities
• Participate in partnerships and collaborations to be the first-line/primary representative of the company Requirements:
• Ph.D.

degree in peptide/organic chemistry with over 10 years’ experience in the pharmaceutical/biotech industry and a strong track record of both scientific successes and leadership in the peptide/medicinal chemistry discipline
• Peptide drug discovery with experience from hit ID to nomination of clinical candidates.

• Deep understanding and working knowledge of peptide/medicinal chemistry, analytical techniques as evidenced by a record of achievement (publications, patents, etc.).

Familiarity with the use of computational and structural biology during the drug discovery process is a plus
• Demonstrable track record of leading/managing early discovery projects and identifying development candidates against challenging targets with a deep understanding of both hit and lead generation and lead optimization.

• Experience in the supervision, mentorship, and development of other scientists.

• A strong understanding of the pharmacology, DMPK and toxicology requirements of oral and injectable therapeutics
• Outstanding scientific leadership, collaboration, and management skills
• Demonstrated ability to plan and achieve research goals as part of an interdisciplinary team.

• Good time management and prioritization skills and ability to successfully manage multiple tasks simultaneously
• Experience managing scientific collaborations and CRO outsourcing activities.

• Excellent working knowledge of critical analytical and separations technologies, such as HPLC, RP-HPLC, LC/MS, Ion exchange and size-exclusion chromatography, and an ability to evaluate new methodologies
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Ability to interact with staff (at all levels) productively ​ Protagonist Therapeutics is a clinical stage biopharmaceutical company that utilizes a proprietary technology platform to discover and develop novel peptide-based drugs to address significant unmet medical needs and transform existing treatment paradigms for patients.

The Company currently has three different assets in various stages of clinical development.

All three were discovered through the use of the Company’s peptide technology platform.

PTG-300 is an injectable hepcidin mimetic in development for the potential treatment of iron overload and related blood disorders, including hereditary hemochromatosis and rare diseases such as beta-thalassemia and polycythemia vera.

PTG-200 is an orally delivered, gut-restricted interleukin-23 receptor specific antagonist peptide in Phase 2 clinical development for the potential treatment of inflammatory bowel disease, with Crohn’s disease as the initial indication.

The Company has a worldwide license and collaboration agreement with Janssen Biotech, Inc., for the clinical development of PTG-200.

PN-943 is an orally delivered, gut-restricted alpha-4-beta-7 integrin specific antagonist peptide in clinical development for the potential treatment of inflammatory bowel disease, with a Phase 2 ulcerative colitis study expected to commence in the second quarter of 2020.
