Nuclear Engineer – Reactor Design

We currently have an exciting position for an experienced Nuclear Engineer to support our Nuclear Technologies and Materials (NTM) division in San Diego, CA. Under general direction with limited review, this position is responsible for developing and analyzing nuclear reactor designs including develop innovative advanced core design technical and engineering solutions to meet complex requirements for the GA-EMS Fast Modular Reactor, nuclear thermal propulsion and space power applications.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Independently perform difficult/complex engineering and design work with instructions as to the general expected results.
  • Provide practical solutions to technical engineering problems in nuclear reactor design, manufacturing and operation to support licensing, construction, startup and commissioning phases.
  • Document findings and communicate reports and technical presentations at engineering meetings and participate in program reviews.
  • Provide support and guidance to other moderately experienced staff members working on reactor engineering including neutronics and thermal/fluids analyses, nuclear systems evaluations and core/assembly analysis.
  • Support future NTM engineering needs required to accomplish technical goals.
  • Address technical issues requiring creative approaches to resolving unusual or complex engineering problems with accuracy, completeness, and timeliness.
  • May assume technical and engineering responsibility for the success of key projects.
  • Be the focal point for technical communication with the Company management and may represent the Company as a technical contact to customers and/or government regulatory agencies.
  • May coordinate segments of a specific project and may have frequent inter-organization and customer contact on nuclear-related technical issues.
  • Maintains the strict confidentiality of sensitive information.
  • Works in a safe manner in accordance with established operating procedures and practices
  • Performs other duties as assigned or required.

Job Qualifications:

  • Typically requires a bachelors degree, masters degree or PhD in engineering or a related technical discipline from an accredited institution and progressive engineering experience as follows; six or more years of experience with a bachelors degree, four or more years of experience with a masters degree, or two or more years with a PhD. May substitute equivalent engineering experience in lieu of education.
  • Must have a complete working knowledge of nuclear engineering concepts, principles, codes, and theory; experience demonstrating a broad application of those concepts; and expanding knowledge of principles, concepts, practices and theory in related technical specialties.
  • Must possess the ability to understand new concepts quickly; apply them accurately throughout an evolving environment; organize, schedule, and coordinate work phases; and, determine the appropriate approach at the task level or, with assistance, at the project level to provide solutions to a range of complex problems.
  • Must have excellent communication, computer, documentation, presentation, and interpersonal skills, ability to work independently and as part of a team; able to perform complex tasks in nuclear engineering; and, lead a team of less experienced professional employees.
  • Must possess a high level of knowledge of reactor design and some working knowledge of nuclear reactor core physics during startup, operation, and accidents including:
    • Reactor core design and analysis including both neutronics and thermal-fluid aspects.
    • Nuclear systems evaluations ? steady state operation, reactivity transients, loss of flow and loss of coolant evaluations and protection systems response.
    • Interface with reactor mechanical design and power conversion system design
    • Core/Assembly analysis ? reactor core power distribution, engineering hot channel factors, shutdown margin, and core reactivity depletion analysis supporting fuel cycle assessment and safety analysis.
    • Computer code expertise including MCNP, RELAP and TRACE (or equivalent) .NEAMS tools and NRC computer codes
  • Able to work extended hours as required.
  • Prior experience operating a research, test, US Navy, or commercial nuclear reactor is desirable.
  • A Professional Engineering License is desirable.
  • A DoD Secret level clearance is desirable.
  • US Citizenship required.
