*STAFF NURSE II – AHMC Seton Medical Center

This is a Contract position in Daly City, CA posted January 13, 2022.

The Staff Nurse is a professional caregiver who assumes responsibility and accountability for the assessment, nursing diagnosis, planning, implementation and evaluation of care for patients and their families in compliance with the standards for care at AHMC – Seton Medical Center and Nurse Practice Act.

Clinical Practice: Nursing
1 Assesses, collects and documents health assessment data focusing on the physical, emotional, spiritual, psychosocial and educational needs of the patient.
a) Interviews the patient/family/significant other to complete PeriOperative Nursing Assessment.
b) Identifies actual and potential needs and determines priority.
c) Identifies barriers to learning.
d) Performs ongoing assessment as indicated by changes in status.


2 Plans nursing care, based on assessment, knowledge of the surgical procedure, data collection such as lab results and radiological exams, and review of the history and physical written by the physician.
a) Develops realistic goals for the preparation and/or recovery from the procedure including airway maintenance, hemostasis, safety, infection control. Incorporates National Patient Safety Goals in the plan of care.
b) Plan demonstrates understanding of age-related needs of the patient.
c) Collaborates with family, physicians, and post-op nursing units to plan for discharge needs


3 Implements the plan of care including prescribed procedures.
a) Incorporates the National Patient Safety Goals in the implementation of the plan of care.
b) Organizes and prioritizes care based on individual patient needs, requirements of the surgical procedure, and preferences of the surgeon and anesthesiologist.
c) Assesses for changes in patient’s condition and appropriateness of the plan.
d) Initiates interventions using appropriate clinical expertise and knowledge.
e) As Primary Nurse, coordinates the activities of health care team members in completing diagnostic and therapeutic interventions.


4 Evaluates the effectiveness of nursing care delivered to reach the expected outcome.
a) Evaluates the plan of care according to the current condition and changing needs of the patient.
b) Accurately and concisely documents the patient’s status and response to the care delivered.


Clinical Practice: PeriOperative Nursing
6 Utilizing professional nursing knowledge and skills. Appropriately assesses for:
a) Physical and psychosocial-emotional needs.
b) Barriers to learning.
c) Educational/learning needs.
d) Discharge needs.
e) Age-related needs.


7 Analyzes patient related data, such as vital signs, medical history and physical exam findings, laboratory values and other information, including age-specific criteria, to determine appropriate care.
f) Maintains competency in applicable procedures:
a. Extubation
Discharge of the Outpatient using criteria for discharge


8 Uses knowledge of the equipment, supplies instrumentation appropriate for the surgical procedure to prepare for appropriate care.


9 Guides and supervises members of the perioperative team in the preparation of the operating room for the intended surgical procedure.


10 Communicate effectively with the members of the team, including physicians, technicians, Charge Nurses and other departments to coordinate care.
11 Effectively performs procedures, such as initiation of IV catheters and administration of fluids and medication, within the scope of practice, and unit, department and Medical Center policies and procedures.
12 Effectively performs other nursing procedures/skills, such as cardiac monitoring, rhythm interpretation, defibrillation, monitoring of conscious sedation, etc., based completed specialty training and scope of practice, and unit, department and Medical Center policies and procedures.


13 Appropriately recognizes and quickly responds to emergency medical situations.
a) Accurately assesses “A-B-Cs.”
b) Initiates appropriate emergency treatment, i.e., CPR, O2, etc.
c) Communicates critical information to other team members.


13 Maintains all required credentials and training (CA RN license, BLS, ACLS, PALS).
14 Remains current in practices/procedures through attendance at continuing education events, in-services and the review of professional literature.
15 Integrates/applies new knowledge from education and research into clinical practice.
16 Demonstrates knowledge of and competence in age-related patient care.
17 Consistently demonstrates knowledge of state and federal regulations, such as Title XXII. Follows all JCAHO guidelines. Incorporates National Patient Safety Goals into practice
18 Consistently completes required documentation of the perioperative visit.
19 Consistently demonstrates caring and compassion through behaviors and interactions in performance of all duties, recognizing the inherent worth and dignity of patients, families, other staff and physicians.




  • Graduation from an accredited school of professional nursing.
  • Baccalaureate degree in Nursing preferred.EXPERIENCE:
  • Staff Nurse II – Minimum of six months Registered Nurse experience.
  • Strong Surgical Services Background preferred
  • Post Cardiothoracic Surgery and PCI & post spine care experience preferred.
  • Recent experience with non-titrating vasoactive agents preferred. CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSURE:
  • Current California licensure as a Registered Nurse required.
  • Current Basic Life Support certification required.OTHER SKILLS, ABILITIES & KNOWLEDGE:
  • Knowledgeable of the California Nursing Practice Act.
  • Able to understand and follow all policies, procedures, guidelines, rules and regulations of Nursing Service, AHMC- Seton Medical Center, AHMC, Title XXII.
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills.
